Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC Calling? My Experience and What I Learned | Forum

So, I've been getting calls from Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC for a few weeks now. At first, I panicked and almost paid them immediately just to make it stop. But I'm glad I didn't.

I decided to do some research before sending any money, and I'm realizing there's a lot more to this than I thought. From what I've gathered, they are a debt buyer, meaning they purchased my old debt for pennies on the dollar. They can be aggressive and even threaten lawsuits, which is what really scared me.

But here's the thing—I've learned you have rights. I requested a debt validation letter within the 30-day window, and it gave me time to actually check if the debt was legitimate and what the original amount was. I also read that they can't call me at work or harass my family, which they haven't done (yet), but it's good to know the rules.

Has anyone else dealt with them recently? Did you negotiate a settlement, or did you have to get a lawyer involved? I'm still figuring out my next step, but I'm feeling a bit more in control now that I understand they can't just do whatever they want.

Any advice from others who've been through this would be really helpful!
